olive grove affected by Xylella

AN ECONOMICAL, ECOLOGICAL, AND ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER

Xylella is a bacterium that attacks and kills olive trees. Given the slow and irresponsable reaction of the administrative, political, and juridical authorities, it has spread rapidly throughout Puglia.

It has affected about 150,000 hectares of olive groves in the provinces of Lecce, Brindisi and Taranto. Centuries-old olive trees had to be felled and uprouted. It's an ethical responsability to replant as soon as possible.

CONFRONTING AN ECONOMICAL, ECOLOGICAL, AND ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER: PLANTING NEW LIFE

In just a few years, Xylella has transformed vast portions of the historical Salento landscape into a desert. An important effort awaits all of us, to replant olive trees and recreate the lost biodiversity. What you see in these images is the replanting of our organic olive grove, which took place in March and April. New Xylella resistant plants have been introduced in the hope of eliminating the blight.

Replanting and diversifying is a moral duty.
